Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks on an excellent season. Though the Icon garage is more Rangers and Wings territory, it's always nice to see an original six team take the cup.  And for a bit of hockey trivia - Did you know the Chicago Blackhawks originated in Portland, Oregon? In fact they played at the Portland Hippodrome which was located in our beloved Slabtown district, a mere five blocks from the current Icon office. Portland, it seems, has a bit more hockey history than most people realize.

Portland's first professional sports team was the Portland Rosebuds. Not only were the Rosebuds the first professional sports team in Oregon, they were the first professional hockey team in the U.S. They joined the Pacific Coast Hockey Association in 1914. They were the first U.S. team to play for the Stanley Cup (in 1916, against the Montreal Canadiens). The initial team folded soon afterwards in 1918, but the Regina Capitals moved into the city and took the same name in 1925. However, this team folded after just a single season. After this, many of the team's players were traded to Chicago and became the core of the new Blackhawks franchise. In 1928 a new Portland team was formed called The Buckaroos. Both the Rosebuds and the Buckaroos played at the Portland Hippodrome, the world’s largest indoor ice rink at the time it was built. It was on NW 22nd and Marshall; it burned down in 1951.

Concept & Execution - Street Angels

Lifestyle/fashion photoshoots often take hours to get just the right shot. In contrast, the Spring 2010 'Street Angel' shoot seemed to happen both instantly and effortlessly.

The reality is that a mountain of effort went into this shoot: designing the gear, spec'ing materials, integrating graphics, imagining advertising concepts, selecting the right models, finding a suitable location... But when the subject matter is so pleasant, the hours seem to pass in an instant.

You've seen it splashed across the pages of Road Rider - the CMYK R1 in all it's four color process glory.  Now check it out in it's natural habitat - in front of the crazy Japanese beverage vending machines. Filled with a dazzling array of beverages, we are constantly baffled by the choices and normally just end up with the unsweetened green tea. It's not that the unsweetened green tea actually tastes good, it's just better than getting a bottle full of grasshopper piss. Trust us, we speak from experience.

Busted and Broken - Surfing

I was on my way to work the other day and had to react fast. Except I reacted the wrong way. I hit the both front and rear brakes hard and lost control. I managed to get on top of my bike and “surf” down the thruway. Better the bike than me sliding along the grooved pavement. I managed to walk away with some bruises and a couple of blisters on my hand thanks to the chukka boots and my icon gloves. I had just recently purchased the chukka boots and glad that I did or my foot would be toast.
